Northern Mockingbird
HERE YEAR ROUND
Our Texas State Bird is a medium-sized slender songbird with a long tail. Adults are grayish above and whitish below with two white wingbars. -
Blue Jay
HERE YEAR ROUND
Blue above and white below, with a prominent crest and a bold black necklace. The wings and tail are barred with black, and it has a bold white wingbar. -
Northern Cardinal
HERE YEAR ROUND
Males are brilliant red with a black mask and throat. Females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail and crest. -
House Sparrow
HERE YEAR ROUND
It is a chunky full-breasted bird with a round head and a stout bill. Breeding males have gray crowns, white cheeks, a black bib and a chestnut neck. -
Mourning Dove
HERE YEAR ROUND
Gray above with large black spots on the wing coverts with pale peach coloring below. It has a long thin tail, thin black bill and pinkish legs. -
White-Winged Dove
HERE YEAR ROUND
A medium-sized dove with a small head and short, square-tipped tail. It is brown overall with a large white patch on the inner wing. -
Inca Dove
HERE YEAR ROUND
A small, slender dove with a small head and narrow, long tail. Pale sandy gray overall with dark feather tips creating a scaled appearance. -
Crested Caracara
HERE YEAR ROUND
A large, long-legged and flat-headed falcon, with a black body and cap with a white neck and cheeks, yellow legs and bare orangish skin around the face. -
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
HERE YEAR ROUND
A medium-sized black and white barred woodpecker with a pale belly. Males have a red crown and nape, females have a red nape, lacking the red crown. -
Downy Woodpecker
HERE YEAR ROUND
Small with a short bill. Upper parts mostly black with a white back and bold white spots in the wings. Head is striped black and white with a red nape. -
Killdeer
HERE YEAR ROUND
A slender shorebird with long wings and tail. Adults have 2 black breast bands. They habitually pause while walking to bob their heads up and down. -
Red-Shouldered Hawk
HERE YEAR ROUND
A medium-sized hawk with slim body and fairly long tail. Adults have extensively reddish brown underparts. Tail and flight feathers are banded black and white. -
Barred Owl
HERE YEAR ROUND
Fairly large, with dark eyes and a yellow bill. Buff-colored below with dark streaks, and brown on the back with white mottling. -
Tufted Titmouse
HERE YEAR ROUND
A small, somewhat stocky bird with a big dark eye and a crest. Is grayish above and white below with a peach wash on the sides. -
European Starling
HERE YEAR ROUND
It’s chunky and blackbird-sized, but with a short tail and a long slender yellow bill. Breeding birds are dark overall with purplish-green iridescence. -
Black Vulture
HERE YEAR ROUND
Large with broad wings, a short tail and a small head. Almost entirely black with a dark gray unfeathered head and silvery patches on the underside of the wings. -
Turkey Vulture
HERE YEAR ROUND
Large and black with a browner back, naked bright red head, and pale bill and legs. Soars with wings raised slightly and rarely flaps. -
Carolina Chickadee
HERE YEAR ROUND
A tiny bird with a short neck and large head, giving it a distinctive spherical body shape. Start white cheeks contrast with black cap and throat. -
Common Grackle
HERE YEAR ROUND
Large, lanky blackbirds with long legs, a long tail and a long and heavy bill. Adult males appear dark overall, but have an iridescent bluish head. -
Great-Tailed Grackle
HERE YEAR ROUND
A long-legged, slender blackbird with a long V-shaped tail, a flat-headed profile, and a stout bill. Males are iridescent black with piercing yellow eyes. -
Mississippi Kite
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
The Mississippi Kite is a slender fairly small raptor with a pale head, dark eye patch, narrow pointed dark gray wings and a long square-tipped tail. -
Black-Bellied Whistling Duck
HERE YEAR ROUND
A long-necked duck with a red bill and long pink legs. Its body is mostly chestnut, with a black belly, gray face, and a white patch on the wings. -
Great Blue Heron
HERE YEAR ROUND
Very large and tall, with a long neck. Grayish-blue over all with a pale belly and dark streak on the neck, with a long orangish-yellow bill. -
Yellow-Billed Cuckoo
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
A long, slim bird with a long tail and long yellow bill. Brownish above and white below, rusty patches in the wing, and black tail with large white spots. -
Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
Tiny, with long wings and bill. Dusky below with a emerald green back and bright red throat. The throat is iridescent and can look black or red. -
Great Crested Flycatcher
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
A large fly-catch with a peaked crown and bright yellow belly. The underside of the tail has a broad rusty stripe down the middle. -
Purple Martin
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
A large swallow with a slightly hooked bill and long, tapered wings. Adult males are iridescent, dark blue-purple overall with brown-black wings and tail. -
Barn Swallow
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
It has broad shoulders that taper to long, pointed wings. Adult males have a steely blue back, wings and tail, with rusty throat and forehead. -
Cliff Swallow
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
A small swallow with broad pointed wings, a small head and a square tail. They build their mud nests on the walls of cliff ledges and under bridges. -
Cedar Waxwing
HERE FOR THE WINTER
It has a black mask and prominent crest with peachy brown head and chest, pale yellow belly, and yellow tip to dark tail. Sometimes wings have red tips. -
Western Kingbird
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
A large hefty flycatcher with a thick bill, a pale gray head, whitish throat, a bright yellow belly and white edging on the outer tail feathers. -
Chimney Swift
HERE FOR THE SUMMER
Small with slender tube-shaped body and very long, narrow curved wings. Dark gray-brown overall with a slightly paler throat.
