The Smithville Birdfest

is a grassroots, for the community by the community event. Just friends and neighbors coming together in the pursuit of happiness and fun. Inspired by the birds that call Smithville home and the creative spirit of the people that live here.

It all started in 2021, the idea of Fred and Laurie Beck, Smithville residents since 2020. They started the The Marsh Project in 2017. A non-profit to support the Matagorda Bay Bird Fest in Palacios, Texas and the Lower Colorado River ecosystem, and hoped they could do something similar in Smithville.

Connecting with a few other creative, like minded Smithvillians, they made it happen. They gathered together to make costumes and masks and paraded down 1st Street downtown for the first ever Smithville Bird Parade and Bird Costume Contest, last year, in August. It was lots of fun for all that participated, but it was way too hot and over too soon.

This year the Smithville Birdfest is bigger and better. Now with more ways for community involvement, and more fun events for all ages, a special bird house project to benefit our local birds, plus a live raptor show by Sky Kings Falconry. And hopefully cooler weather in October.

Come join the fun, get involved and let’s all have flocks of fun.
